Spider Veins Q & A

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are tiny blood vessels that you can see on your skin’s surface. They’re red, blue, or purple and usually flush against your skin. Unlike varicose veins, they’re not large or bulging and are mostly a cosmetic issue.

Spider veins are unlikely to cause any other symptoms like pain or irritation. However, their appearance on your face or legs might cause you to feel self-conscious about the way they look. Spider vein treatments available at Dr. White’s Vein Center and Morgantown SculpSure & Clear Ink, PLLC can alleviate your spider veins so you can enjoy clear and uniform skin.

What causes spider veins?

There are a few different factors that cause spider veins to appear on your face or legs (their two most common locations).

Spider veins in your legs are usually an indication of faulty valves within the veins of your legs. The valves in your veins allow your blood to travel upward toward your heart. When they don’t work properly, your blood pools and expands the veins.

Spider veins in your face have a different set of causes. If you have spider veins on your face, it may be due to either sun damage or increased pressure. Both of these factors can cause blood vessels near your skin’s surface to burst.

A few factors that put you at risk for spider veins in general are:

  • Genetics
  • Obesity
  • Old age
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormones

While you can’t always prevent spider veins from appearing on your skin, you can lower your risk by wearing sunscreen, avoiding sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time, limiting alcohol, and maintaining a healthy weight.

What are my treatment options for spider veins?

At Dr. White’s Vein Center and Morgantown SculpSure & Clear Ink, PLLC, Dr. White and the team provide many treatments and lifestyle suggestions to treat spider veins. If you decide that you don’t like the way your skin looks with spider veins, you should attend a consultation with Dr. White. To treat your spider veins, she might recommend:

Exercise Stockings Elevation and Still (ESES)

ESES is a conservative approach to treating spider veins. Dr. White encourages you to get regular exercise, wear compression stockings to prevent your leg veins from worsening, and elevate your legs while at rest.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an effective spider vein treatment that uses an injectable solution to dissolve the vein. Dr. White injects the solution into a spider vein, which causes the vein to constrict, close, and eventually disappear.
